You’ve got this!
How is your 2025 going so far?
Eleven more months of this new year stretch ahead of us, full of challenges and opportunity. Depending on your outlook and circumstances, you may find that a daunting prospect, or an exciting one. 😊
Facing the Challenges
There are certainly many challenges we face as Volunteer Engagement Professionals. But the good news is that many of them aren’t new challenges. They are things we’ve been grappling with since 2000 and, if we’re honest, for a lot longer than that.
- Demographic change in our volunteer teams, especially as our ultra-reliable and committed volunteers age out.
- Declining volunteer hours.
- People want to be much more casual and flexible in how they volunteer.
The list can go on and on and on if we let it.
A Moment of Pause
Today, I want you to take a step back from those challenges and take a pause. I want you to spend the next few minutes reading this article in the hope it will encourage and enthuse you afresh for the year ahead.
Your Transformative Role
Start by taking a moment to remember that the role you play as a Volunteer Engagement Professional is not only vital, but transformative. You don’t just manage volunteers; you inspire movements, nurture compassion, and help people change the world for the better.
What you do isn’t merely about logistics or schedules; it is about leadership that resonates at the core of human potential. You are the link between people’s desire to make a difference and the impact they aspire to achieve. Through your guidance, volunteers discover purpose, gain confidence, and create ripples of positive change in their communities.
Unlocking Potential
It’s also important to remember the incredible potential that you hold. The volunteers you work with come to you with diverse skills, experiences, and aspirations. Your ability to harness their strengths and guide them toward meaningful contributions is a form of alchemy, turning something we all have (time) into something precious and special. Every conversation you have, every small encouragement you give, and every system you improve contributes to unlocking that potential.
Self-Care and Growth

In the busy bubble of our volunteer management world, it’s easy to focus entirely on others, often forgetting our own needs. But to inspire others, you must stay inspired. Throughout the year, take some time to reflect on what drives your passion for volunteering. Reconnecting with your own “why” can reinvigorate your enthusiasm and remind you of the important difference you’re making every day.
Make time this year to seek opportunities for professional growth, connect with peers who share your challenges, and celebrate the small wins as much as the large ones. Remember, your well-being is essential to sustaining the energy and vision that your role demands. You are the foundation upon which so much good is built; ensure that foundation is strong.
Looking Ahead

This year, perhaps more than ever before, the world will continue to need leaders like you — leaders who see potential in others and know how to bring it to life. You will face challenges, but you will also witness triumphs. You will see volunteers discover their own power to create change, and you will know that you were a part of their journey. 🌟
When 2025 gets you down, know that your work matters. It matters to the volunteers who look to you for guidance. It matters to the organisations that rely on your expertise. Most importantly, it matters to the countless individuals and communities whose lives are brighter because of your efforts.
May the rest of 2025 see many bold ideas, meaningful connections, and extraordinary impact in our communities and across the globe. Embrace the months ahead with confidence, knowing that the potential to change the world lies not only in your volunteers but within you as well. Together, there is no limit to what you can achieve.
