Imagine waking up knowing that, because of you, someone has food on their table. A child feels safe. A family has hope again.

Now imagine going through your whole life and never using your time or talents to help someone else. Which version of your life would you be most proud of?

Every day, our neighbors face hunger, isolation, homelessness, and loneliness. Nonprofits do incredible work, but they can’t do it alone. They don’t just need money — they need people. People who care. People who show up. There’s a gap between what our community needs and what it’s getting, and that gap can only be filled by volunteers.

Volunteers Are Invaluable

The value of volunteers goes far beyond good intentions. According to Independent Sector, the estimated value of a volunteer hour is more than $30. That means every time you show up and give an hour of your time, you’re giving the equivalent of a $30 donation—and for some nonprofits, those hours are the difference between meeting needs and leaving them unmet.

But the benefits go both ways. Research from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Washington shows that volunteering improves mental and physical health, lowers stress, builds connections, and can even help you live longer. It’s not just about helping others — it’s good for you, too.

“I’m Too Busy” and Other Myths

A lot of people want to help, but the most common thing we hear is, “I just don’t have time.” The truth? You don’t need a ton of time to make a difference. Even one afternoon a month can change someone’s life.

One of our volunteers, Tom, is a perfect example. He wanted his son to grow up with a heart for the community, but he realized the most powerful way to teach that was by modeling it himself. So once a month, Tom and his son came to our shelter to serve lunch — just 90 minutes a month. It wasn’t complicated, but it was life-changing.

Tom’s son has since graduated and moved on, but Tom still volunteers every month. What began as a way to teach his son about compassion has become something deeply meaningful to him personally. He often tells us that those 90 minutes fill him up as much as they help the people he serves.

And if you’re a parent? Volunteering together is an incredible way to bond with your kids and instill lifelong values. If you’re a student or young professional, volunteering stands out on your resume and shows leadership, empathy, and initiative — qualities colleges and employers look for. No matter who you are, volunteering is worth the investment.

Your Small Step Can Make a Big Difference

There’s a volunteer opportunity for every age, schedule, and skill set. Whether it’s tutoring a student, serving meals, packing hygiene kits, helping at events, or supporting people in crisis, there’s a place for you.

You might come thinking you’re helping someone else — but often, you’ll find that volunteering transforms you, too.
